Highland Youth Basketball League
2017-18 League Rules
The main purpose of the HYBL is to instruct, develop & prepare players for Middle School basketball. We want to continue the rich basketball traditions of Knox, Morrow, and Marion counties. While winning is important and extremely fun, we do not want our teams and coaches to sacrifice player development in the long run for success in the short run. We will uphold the balance of sportsmanship and competition to ensure an exciting, productive, and meaningful experience for all.
Games will consist of two 20 minute halves. The clock will stop and run on normal timing during the last minute of each half. If a team is up by more than 15 in the last minute of the second half the clock will continue to run. Teams will have a 5-10-minute warm-up. Halftime will be 3 minutes and the intermission after the 1st and 3rd periods will be 1 minute. If there is overtime, we will begin the extra period with a jump ball and it will be sudden victory (first made basket or FT wins). Fouls will carry over to the overtime period.
Each team will have two 60 second timeouts per half. Each team will receive one additional 60 second timeout in overtime.
Boys and Girls Grades 3 and 4:
Only man-to-man defense is permitted. Full-court defense is permitted during the last 2 minutes of the game. If a team is winning by 15 points or more, no full court pressure is permitted. Please note that ONLY man-to-man full court pressure is permitted in the final 2 minutes. The penalty for an illegal defense is a warning for the first offense, followed by a technical foul assessed to the head coach for subsequent offenses.
Free throws will be shot from 12 feet (players can obviously shoot from the regular free throw line if they choose). From the blue in the High School gyms. Officials will help with lining up.
NFHS and middle school OHSAA rules will govern unless specified above.
Boys and Girls Grades 5 and 6:
No full court pressure if a team is winning by 15+.
All other NFHS and middle school OHSAA rules will apply.
*** Directors of the League reserve the right to remove all players, coaches, and parents who do not follow through with the rules, regulations and philosophy of the league.
